What instructions should I give to translators?

To ensure you get the best possible translation for your needs, it helps to slow down and take the time to give the translator a little information up front. This will help the translator choose the appropriate writing style when translating the text.​

When posting a new translation request, add a short description of the content, type of document, what you are using it for, and any style guidelines. You can also add a picture or URL with the original content of the request. Use the 'Instructions for the Translator' and 'Additional Info' box.

Below are examples of items you might want to consider.

Terms & Names

If you have a glossary of terms or names you would like the translator to follow, please inform them beforehand.

For example:
• Conyac is a service name.
• Xtra, Inc. is a company name.

If you have files you would like the translator to refer to, attach them using the "Upload" button in the comment section of the Translation Details page.

Country-specific Guidelines

Certain countries have their own official translation guidelines issued by local authorities or organizations. However, the translator may not be aware of them. To save time, we recommend providing them with links to any such resources before they start work.

Technical Content

• If the manuscript contains HTML or software code, please indicate the parts which do not require translation.
• If you have a specific glossary or style guide you would like used, please either attach it as a file or provide a link to the document online. For example, you may have an in-house style guide or refer them to a commonly used one as the Microsoft Style Guide.

Character Limits

If you are working with space constraints due to layout and other factors, be sure to advise any requirements regarding style and the maximum number of characters which can be used. For example, subtitles and games tend to have strict length limitations.

Note that in some languages, the translation may be significantly longer (or shorter) than the original. For example, German is known to be particularly long due to the way words are spelled, whereas Chinese is compact since it uses pictographic characters.
